Alarmed by the consequences of absentee ownership and management by profit motive, and effectively shut out of newspaper purchases by high prices, nine family-owned companies have agreed to share their fiscal resources if, by doing so, they can buy a newspaper one of them alone could not afford.
Even more intriguing, though, are the social and cultural practices that developed, especially the manipulation of the system by masters (or rather overseers, as absentee ownership was typical of this region) and slaves, each for their own gains.
Absentee ownership is assumed when bills for property taxes are sent out-of-state.
