| Consequently, the
biggest impact of bioterrorism is psychological, initially in the form
of mass panic and later ranging from acute stress disorder, anger, or
guilt to posttraumatic stress disorder, phobias, sleep disorders,
depression, or substance abuse (DiGiovanni, 1999). Symptoms of Acute Stress Disorder may be apparent,
including a subjective sense of numbing and detachment, a reduction in
the awareness of one's surroundings, a sense of derealization and
depersonalization, and an inability to recall important aspects of the
precipitating circumstances (American Psychiatric Association [APA],
1994). If the symptoms appear and subsequently disappear
within a 1-month time frame, then acute stress disorder should be
investigated. |
