In 1994, 5,500 bait doses were also distributed aerially along the
ravine systems from a Turbo Beaver aircraft flying at an altitude of 150
m with an approximate airspeed of 140 km/hr. "We load planes up with a payload of grass seed, lime and
fertilizer, and we aerially treat these areas by dumping this mixture
onto a section of land that's relatively inaccessible by any other
means," says Quentin Smith, environmental engineer, Inco's
Environment, Health and Safety Department. The children of three small agriculturally based
towns located in the Yaqui Valley were examined; the fields surrounding
the towns have monocropped fields with pesticide applied aerially. |
