Pilgrims walk seven times around the Kaaba, a large, black cube they believe Abraham and his son Ishmael built and which Muslims face when praying. Ostensibly historical but altogether more lively than that designation might imply, the exhibition included works spanning the years 1964 to 1974 and included several of McCracken's signature planks as well as a number of smaller blocks on pedestals, one enormous black cube, a single wall-mounted panel, and a number of pages culled from his notebooks. In a previous work, Room-Block, 1966, Bochner envisioned a gallery filled up by a giant black cube. |
