An arrest; a seizure of a defendant. A sheriff or other public officer can be ordered by a court to arrest a defendant and the officer executes the order by taking the body of the defendant into custody. The order itself may be called a capias, or capias ad satisfaciendum (Latin for "that you take him in order to satisfy it"). How to thank TFD for its existence?
