No particular Catholic marriage ritual emerged until after the 11th century, and then the church's requirements focused on the presence of witnesses. At one point PLO diplomat Lily Habash wryly compares the Israeli/Palestinian relationship to a Catholic marriage. Requiring the state to honour all private contracts not actually outlawed, and giving the state only that authority over any given marriage which the spouses might delegate to government, would protect the indissolubility of Catholic marriage at least. |
