A colloquial phrase that refers to the solemnization or formalization of a marriage. In a number of states there must be a celebration of a marriage through some type of official government ceremony before a marriage will be legally recognized. Some statutes provide that every Justice of the Peace of a particular state, every minister, and every religious society be empowered to solemnize marriage. The type of celebration required varies according to state law and religious custom. How to thank TFD for its existence?
