Although in the Poetics Aristotle famously argued that tragedy elicits and purges the emotions of pity and fear, in the De clementia Seneca asserted that pity and theatricality were mutually enforcing. The justice of the prince is immediately associated with the virtues of benevolentia, liberalitas, and clementia. Seneca's arguments in De clementia offer almost a point-by-point critique of Euarchus's position. |
