criminal attorney n. a popular term for an attorney who specializes in defending people charged with crimes. Many lawyers handle criminal defense, but also have other clientele. However, some states will certify a lawyer as a "criminal law specialist" based on experience and extra training in that field. (See: crime, felon, misdemeanor)
