Prominent among those companies is Crospon of Galway, a medical device pioneer that just agreed to a worldwide distribution deal for its flagship gastroenterology product, EndoFLIP, a diagnostic tool for assessing the competence of the gastroesophageal junction in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD).
The clinician inserts a specially-designed device through the patient's mouth and into the stomach, just below the gastroesophageal junction, where tissue is molded to create a new valve.
In a study of more than 400 patients, the most common sites of foreign body impaction within the esophagus were at the level of the postcricoid region (57%), the aortic arch and left main bronchus (26%), and the distal gastroesophageal junction (17%).
