In adapting Ken Kesey's novel, playwright Dale Wasserman kept the story in a mental asylum, but that appears to be beside the point. It all started in March 1965 when, having just been appointed alderman, he visited the Provincial Mental Asylum of Parma, for which he was responsible, and was horrified by the appalling conditions people were working and living in. Before 1960, it had already survived decades of serving as a prison, mental asylum, poorhouse, hospital and graffiti canvas. |
