Australian Catholic University research comparing the musculoskeletal health of adolescent middle-distance runners with a control group of relatively inactive teenagers found that elite female runners had significantly greater bone densities than the controls. For a middle-distance runner (racing between 5 and 15K), long runs should generally not make up more than 25% of total weekly mileage, threshold running 8 to 10%, intervals 6 to 8% and repetition pace 5%. |
