NIEHS grantee Michael Karin of the University of San Diego, California, and colleagues sought to elucidate the role of NF-[kappa]B in severe systemic inflammation and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS).
Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) was chosen as the indicator of hypoperfusion because it is generally accepted that early hypoperfusion is associated with later development of organ dysfunction.
Sepsis and multiple organ dysfunction syndromes are the main causes of death in the intensive care unit.
