Among the earliest and most influential formulations have been by Roland Robertson in many works; among them, Globalization: Social Theory and Global Culture (London, 1992), where he speaks of the "universalism of particularism and the particularization of universalism," 102. At the outset of the text, Watt identifies four elements--the individuation of characters, the detailed presentation of space, the emphasis on probability in plot, and the particularization of time--central to the revolution in narrative art represented by the fictions of Defoe, Richardson, and Fielding (13-18). She decries this particularization of whiteness and sees it as seeking to minimize the impact of the pernicious exclusions and discriminations that people of color encounter on a day-to-day basis (Wiegman 11 8). |
