patent infringement n. the manufacture and/or use of an invention or improvement for which someone else owns a patent issued by the government, without obtaining permission of the owner of the patent by contract, license or waiver. The infringing party will be liable to the owner of the patent for all profits made from the use of the invention, as well as any harm which can be shown by the inventor, whether the infringement was intentional or not. First, patent litigation in the United States rose sharply in 1990s, and the costs of patent litigation rose even more sharply (the major exceptions to this trend were in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries).
He clearly describes what is patentable, how to read an existing patent, how to capture ownership of patents, the "patent pending" (and pending and pending) process, the relationship between patent prosecution and management, the international patent situation, the effects of patent litigation (including exhaustion and suits that long outlive the suitors) and the tricky business of buying and licensing patents.
The company said the drop in income reflects expected decreases in royalty revenue and interest income resulting from a patent litigation settlement and related dividend distributions, as well as planned increases in research and development, sales, marketing and general and administrative expenses.
