To contribute to the scant data on syphilis screening and prevalence in psychiatric patients, we aimed: (i) to determine and compare the prevalence of syphilis among different psychiatric inpatient groups; (ii) to determine and compare the psychiatric diagnoses of syphilis-infected and -uninfected patients; (iii) to assess self-reported high-risk sexual behaviour among patients; (iv) to establish the syphilis/HIV co-morbidity among patients; (v) and to investigate the performance of the non-treponemal RPR test as a screening method compared with the confirmatory treponemal-specific TPHA test.
Of all 6,548 specimens reactive to the treponemal EIA test and then tested using an RPR test, 44% were reactive and 56% (3% of the overall sample) non-reactive with an RPR test.
3) The RPR test is of particular interest in our case because although our patient exhibited many of the characteristic findings of secondary syphilis, his initial screening test for syphilis yielded a false negative as a result of the prozone phenomenon.

The RPR test suite allows users not only the flexibility of generating, analyzing and capturing both Data and Control packets exchanged between nodes within an RPR ring environment, but the additional advantage of being able to manipulate and configure the contents of the packets to test a myriad of ring scenarios.
