When contemporary, mainstream media in Canada is dominated by "war on crime" rhetoric, angry denunciations of the criminal justice system as being "soft on criminals," and scathing condemnation of criminal defence lawyers and judges in general, it is refreshing to read a thoughtful and eloquent statement in LAWNow of an alternative approach to dealing with the large mass of repeat offenders who are responsible for most of the petty crime in our society.
Meanwhile the House Criminal Affairs sub-committee heard yesterday that approximately that half of prison inmates are repeat offenders.
Media have also noticed that these repeat offenders have received scores of violation slips.
