According to a study by the Colombian National Planning Office, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) obtained 60 per cent of their income from drug trafficking, and some paramilitary leaders of the United Self-Defence Forces (AUC) recognized that the greater portion of their funds depends on drug trafficking. Japan's defence buildup is driven by the ambition of the Defence Agency and Self-Defence Forces to have a credible state-of-the-art military force, by business' desire for a competitive defence industry, and officials' wish to hedge against the day when American protection is reduced. |
