Differentiation and development of the sexual organs continues throughout gestation under the guidance of the various sex hormones (such as estrogen and testosterone) produced by the endocrine system. But Vilain identified 54 genes that work differently in the brains of male and female mouse embryos just 10 days after conception, before sex hormones are ever produced. Evidence that sex hormones play a role in this loss of resistance is shown by a study on the effects of male castration on longevity (3). |
