Airborne reconnaissance assets will apparently become the principal carriers of information on the theater-of-operation level: SR-71, U-2, and RC-135 strategic reconnaissance aircraft; E-3 (AWACS) and E-2 (Hawkeye) long-range radar reconnaissance aircraft (air-, sea-, and partially ground-based targets); Global Hawk drones, and others. Special operations forces were assigned missions of unconventional warfare, direct action, strategic reconnaissance, foreign internal defense, civilian affairs, psychological warfare, counterterrorism, humanitarian assistance, and theater search and rescue. ``Tensions with Iraq have increased since you wrote this letter, and we believe that providing our military and intelligence officials with a high-value strategic reconnaissance capability that only the SR-71 can offer is of the utmost importance,'' the congressmen wrote. |
