suffering n. the pain, hurt, inconvenience, embarrassment, inability to perform normal activities as a result of injury, usually in the combination "pain and suffering," for which a person injured by another's negligence or wrongdoing may recover "general damages" (a money amount not based on specific calculation like medical bills, but as compensation for the suffering which is subjective and based on the empathy of the trier of the facts---jury or judge without a jury).
