| In fact, human nature being what it is, governmental agencies authorized to use deadly force or to snoop will inevitably become oppressive--unless those powers are constrained by a system of law that protects the governed from the government. Solving the problem of economic instability means facing up to a fundamental truth: that the system of law in place in virtually every society around the world secures and protects entrenched privilege at the expense of equality of opportunity and true liberty. These figures, however, obscure that fact that some people marry in terms of both civil and customary norms, and may look to either system of law in the case of a dispute. |
