Depending on the type of medication, a topical drug is applied directly to the acne lesions or to the entire area of skin affected.
The purpose of this article is to provide a discussion of the principles of transdermal drug delivery, types of drugs frequently used in phonophoresis, local and systemic effects of phonophoresis, principles of US as an enhancer of topical drug absorption, effectiveness of US as an enhancer of topically applied drugs, clinical implications of research findings, and recommendations for future research.
