| Plans for a traprock quarry on Lake Superior have been temporarily stonewalled by a group of Wawa cottagers fighting to stop industrial development along what they consider sensitive, pristine and protected shoreline. In the early 1960s, however, Hudson County leased Laurel Hill to a traprock quarry, which proceeded to demolish three-quarters of it within five years, lowering its height by 50 feet in the process. An official with a company proposing the development of a traprock mining operation near Wawa has come out to defend his company's intentions. |
