Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins) and John Merrick (John Hurt) introduces us to a carnival side show attraction who turns out to be an exquisitely gentle human being.
However, in a paragraph added after the completion of his manuscript, he specifies that a hundred years earlier, some Cistercian nuns near Treves were already practising a form of chaplet in which the life of Christ was divided up among the decades.
