Spencer's stage name was a deliberate throwback to Ritchie Valens, the American singer who died in the same plane crash which killed Buddy Holly in February 1959.
But unlike Ritchie Valens and his meteoric rise and just as sudden (and literal) fall, the bankers, traders, hedge funders and other money-shifters enjoyed stardom for years.
