wheel-clamping

the practice of immobilizing a motor vehicle for illegal parking. The lawful authorities now have this power in many legal systems. Without such powers the practice can infringe the criminal law depending on the circumstances and the legal system applying: see e.g. TRESPASS, THEFT, EXTORTION. So great have been the problems in England and Wales that there is now legislation against the UNLICENSED WHEEL-CLAMPER.
