aliment

in Scots family law, the obligation to maintain a member of one's family. It is now generally regulated by statute. Spouses have a mutual duty of aliment. The obligation is to provide such support as is reasonable in the circumstances. It is possible to bring an action although the spouses are living together, as where the spouse earning money keeps the other short of money. The amount is related to need and ability to pay. It may be obtained on an interim basis. See also CHILD SUPPORT.
