case management

the proactive approach to processing a legal matter. It comprises various techniques and seeks to avoid a process which requires or relies upon reaction. There are two main applications relevant to law. Law firms may use case management to make sure that staff process cases effectively and efficiently, at the same time improving billing and hence cash flow for the firm. Courts in recent years have adopted a range of case management techniques whereby the Judge has power to move matters on absent activity from the parties in the interests of justice. See e.g. HEAR-BY DATES, TECHNOLOGY AND CONSTRUCTION COURT.
