CHIROGRAPHER. A word derived from the Greek, which signifies "a writing with
a man's hand." A chirographer is an officer of the English court of C. P.who
engrosses the fines, and delivers the indentures of them to the parties, &c.

They arrived bearing such piquant names as Machine Kryptographique, Tachigraph, Mechanical Potenografo, Cembalo-Scrivano (Writing Harpsichord), Typographer, and Chirographer; and they resembled sewing machines, guillotines, mousetraps, miniature presses, spinning tops, and small pianos (pianos a ecrire).
