Court of arches

Also found in: Dictionary, Wikipedia.

COURT OF ARCHES, eccl. law. The most ancient consistory court belonging to the archbishop of Canterbury for the trial of spiritual causes. It is so called, because it was anciently held in the church of Saint Mary le bow; which church had that appellation from its steeple, which was raised at the top with stone pillars, in the manner of an arch or bow. Termes de la Ley.

To this is added a series of twenty-four case studies based on the records of the Court of Arches. These will doubtless be interesting and instructive to those with no knowledge of the subject, but are probably little different from what any competent researcher could come up with after two or three months working on this or an equivalent archive.
