As an extension of the VLT, the West German report proposes a 1-kilometerlong array of six to 12 telescopes that would be capable of resolving detail in visible light to one ten-thousandth of a second of arc, which is as well as radio VLBI now does.
"The diameter of the star was found to be 0.0068 [+ or -] 0.0005 second of arc, agreeing well with the angular diameter of 0.0063 second computed from the known surface temperature and brightness of Sirius."
The MMT can point to within 0.3 second of a arc, it can track objects across the sky to an accuracy of 0.1 second of arc, and after a great deal of work, its images can be coaligned and made to coincide as well as astronomers would like.
