Improving the generalization of sound/symbol knowledge: Teaching
spelling to kindergarten children with disabilities.
Freebody & Luke, 2003, and earlier, Wray, Medwell, Fox & Poulson, 2000) teachers tend to approach
spelling as a task of rote memorisation or drill, and this view is reflected in the use of the dominant
spelling strategy Look, Say, Cover, Write and Check (LSCWC or variations on the theme).
Twenty-one verses present various witchy
spelling challenges and could be used as exercises; here are some of the titles; Walking (The witch makes up an 'alk' sound), Why Oh Why/(The witch gives the letter Y different sounds) e.g.

Spelling Challenge tested common misspellings such as 'dissapoint' instead of 'disappoint', 'ocurred' instead of 'occurred', and 'definately' instead of 'definitely'.
And around two thirds (65%) picked a wrong
spelling for "necessary" from a list that did not include the right
spelling.
