The body's energy expenditure is usually described as consisting of three components: the basal metabolic rate (BMR), the energy expended in physical activity, and the thermic effect of feeding (TEF). The following studies have attempted to assess the resting energy expenditure (REE), basal energy expenditure (BEE) or basal metabolic rate (BMR) in patients with DMD, and consider whether weight gain or loss is due to altered intake and/or abnormal expenditure of energy, or whether REE or BEE may be reduced as a result of decreased muscle mass. |
