In a tight-knit community that churched, schooled and collectively raised the kids on the block, he learned the importance of a strong work ethic and the value of a good education. Writing about keeping churched children in the church during the unpredictable years puts one on treacherous terrain, especially if the writer, myself, still has a teenager at home. Certainly growing up in the Northwest, the most religiously variegated and least churched part of the country, and coming from the family that I did gave me a certain sort of critical perspective. |
