| Most Brachyspira species have a restricted host range, whereas Brachyspira (formerly Serpulina) pilosicoli colonizes a variety of animal and bird species and humans. The new species' name means "sand lover,' and, unlike most sand grain species, it colonizes rounded surfaces of grains, rather than crevices. |
