| Doppler ultrasound, a more sensitive technology than conventional ultrasound, can detect congestive heart failure in a six-week-old embryo, according to a study based on results for 1,530 pregnant women. Congestive heart failure (CHF) is one of the leading causes of death in the United States: nearly 5 million people suffer from the most common forms of heart failure (idiopathic and ischemic), and about half of CHF patients die within five years. The county estimates that it earns $10 million treating the roughly 5,000 congestive heart failure patients who are admitted to county hospitals each year. |
