The Rosetta Stone is a dark grey-pinkish granite stone (often incorrectly identified as basalt) with writing on it in two languages, Egyptian and Greek, using three scripts, Hieroglyphic, Demotic, Egyptian and Greek. His prose sometimes hovers between demotic and didactic, and the book suffers greatly from lack of illustrations of many of the works mentioned (particularly the less well-known ones).
