70) It states that, although seventeenth-century England allowed hanging, embowelling alive, beheading, quartering, public dissection, and burning alive as punishments and, "in very atrocious crimes other circumstances of terror, pain or disgrace [were] super-added" to the punishment, "the humanity of the English nation has authorized, by a tacit consent, an almost general mitigation of such part of these judgments as savor of torture or cruelty.
