The statement said that elections were of particular importance because they were the first elections to be held in Kosovo since its declaration of independence.
The United States Monday praised the Kosovo government for its handling of its first elections since its independence last year, calling them "a significant milestone" on the road to democracy.
Voters in Kosovo are choosing mayors and deputies for 36 town councils in the first election organized after the breakaway Serbian province declared independence in 2008.
