| These areas have fostered human acquisition of Ebola (6,7), monkeypox (8), simian immunodeficiency viruses (9), simian foamy viruses (10), and primate T-lymphotropic viruses (11). Simian foamy viruses (SFVs) are exogenous complex retroviruses, highly prevalent in several animal species in which they cause persistent infections (16-26). Simian foamy viruses are members of this group, and the high rates of viral chatter observed in Cameroon suggest a strong potential for their emergence as a human-to-human transmitted pathogen. |
