For example, there's a funeral scene and in our treatment we're focalising it through the sort of ritual beer-making and drinking ceremony that would accompany a similar scene in the townships.
The reader has to instantly cue in to the fact that the first person narrator is used--a common technique for children's novels--and to realise that they are being given a filtered point of view through this focalising character.
This has the result of focalising attention around white, heterosexualised juvenile agents whilst any kind of engagement with the actual populations of the worlds encountered and subsequent involvement in anything like history dematerialises into a bluescreen, computer generated backdrop.
