The legitimising function seeks to lend plausibility to a given social reality such as the authority structure of the school or the classroom.
Legitimising the work of men's health enables hitherto avoided debates to be opened up about men as fathers, perpetrators and victims of violence, the special health needs of gay men, the needs of homeless men, men who use drugs, men who are disabled, and other marginalized groups.
In these ways government-sponsored statistical collections can assist in legitimising power and confirming status among favoured population groups.
