McDonald's lodged a complaint in the British courts, claiming "that McDonald's has been `greatly damaged in its trading reputation,' and has `been brought into public scandal, odium and contempt' by a `fact sheet' which has libelously alleged that, among other things, McDonald's causes the evictions of small farmers in the Third World, destroys rainforests, lies about its use of recycled paper, misleads the public about the nutritional value of their food, sells food high in sugar and salt to encourage an addiction to it, uses gimmicks to cover up that the food is of low quality, targets most of their advertising at children, are responsible for the inhumane treatment of animals, sells hamburgers likely to cause food poisoning, pay bad wages, are only interested in cheap labour etc.
