municipal court |
0.06 sec. |
|
municipal court n. a lower court which usually tries criminal misdemeanors and civil lawsuits involving lesser amounts of money than superior, district or county courts. The authority, importance and geographical area covered differ from state to state. In California, municipal courts have county-wide jurisdiction, conduct preliminary hearings of felonies, and try cases up to $25,000, while in many states they only handle cases arising out of violations of city ordinances, traffic and/or small claims. |

Justice Margaret Grignon, a former Lancaster Superior Court and Antelope Municipal Court judge, retired from the Court of Appeal in December. The federal district court held that a municipal court clerk was entitled to absolute quasi-judicial immunity from liability for her handling of the entry dismissing all charges against the suspect. Meanwhile, the Municipal Court judges typically have run the treadmill of simpler misdemeanor cases, like traffic violations, with many of these judges clearly hoping for advancement to the Superior Court. |
