A schwannoma (acoustic neuroma or neurilemmoma) is a globular, firm, tan-yellow, solid to cystic neoplasm of nerve sheath (Schwann) cells. In multiple sclerosis, lesions on nerve sheaths usually lead to progressive weakness and tremors, which often follow a cyclic course of exacerbations and remissions. The histologic differential diagnosis is predicated on whether the tumor is biphasic or monophasic; it includes adenocarcinoma, spindle cell carcinoma, fibrosarcoma, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor, glomangiopericytoma (hemangiopericytoma), leiomyosarcoma, malignant melanoma, epithelioid sarcoma, and angiosarcoma. |
