Indeed Tolkien, nigglingly careful writer that he was, never has any Elf use the name Melkor after this chronological point in the story; nor does the narrator of sections of the Silmarillion purportedly written by Elves use any term but Morgoth.
The script is nigglingly unclear at a key point in the story but the film is ambitious, convincingly reaches beyond baseball, and has great spirit and humanity.
