| Erectile disorder (70%) and premature ejaculation (25%) were the most common principal diagnoses in the male sample, while hypoactive sexual desire (38%), vaginismus (24%), and orgasmic disorders (20%) were the main female complaints. That represents close to 50 million women in the United States today that have experienced a lack of desire, lack of arousal, orgasmic disorders, or sexual pain disorders. Sexual dysfunctions (disorders of sexual desire such as underactive sexual desire, sexual arousal disorders such as male erectile dysfunction, orgasmic disorders such as inability to achieve orgasm, and premature ejaculation) are very prevalent, with estimates for individual disorders ranging from 8% to 33% of the adult population (Laumann, Paik, & Rosen, 1999). |
