With residents up in arms, house prices set to fall, and people wanting to move out, it won't be long before this once great part of our city becomes like Brent or Tower Hamlets, in East London, where the majority of the population are foreign-born, and the British have moved out to outlying areas.
Cape Town's notorious summer south-easter winds, accompanied by dry weather and high temperatures, has led to a heated fire season this year, mostly in the outlying areas of the city where historic vineyards and farmland was destroyed.
Now, years later, some relatives live near Ushaw Moor in County Durham, which has allowed me to get to know the area more fully and to be amazed at the length of journeys back then, as well as the travel times from some of the more outlying areas (all by special bus).
