Schmidt has been pithing in the minor leagues as he nears a return from a nearly one-year absence because of shoulder surgery.
That hasn't happened yet, but the Daily Post last week learnt of a pithing incident that will set the industry's alarm bells ringing - a slaughterman's finger was partially severed by a kicking cow in Stone, Staffordshire.
The method - called pithing - is illegal in abattoirs because of the risk of contaminating meat with brain material.
